Where am I supposed to put their food?

The boy has discovered the cat food.

I was brushing my teeth when I heard him slap-slap-slapping his way to freedom. He usually only makes it around the corner before getting stymied by the printer buttons (we have to keep the printer on the floor. Don't ask) but today he decided to shake things up a bit and headed towards the kitchen. We don't normally allow him there but I was busy fighting tooth decay, plus he's too short to reach the stove. Unfortunately he's the perfect height to reach the cat food. Even more unfortunately, now that he's discovered it he's obsessed. Every time I put him down to crawl he goes slap-slap-slapping towards the kitchen.

I don't want to put up a baby gate if I can help it. Our apartment is the size of a thumbtack; the thought of making it smaller is just too depressing. I don't actually think he'll eat their food (Prince Fancyface over here is still loathe to sully his fingers), I'm more concerned that he'll make mudpies with the wet food and leave catfood-scented handprints all over the floor. Potential food poisoning? Eh. More work for mama? GET AWAY FROM THE CATFOOD. Ah, the thrill of good parenting...

make sure it won't poison him (check the ingredients, maybe buy organic one week)... put a little bit in the bowl and let him eat it. just taste it yourself first to make sure it isn't good. maybe once he realizes that it isn't tasty and trying to eat doesn't get a reaction out of you, he won't try to eat it?

my parents' photo albums are peppered with blurry 1970's pictures of me eating dog food. whatcha gonna do?

I actually don't think he'll eat it, it's more about touching it. (I guess cat food does have an interesting texture.) I just want to put it up so that I don't have to keep running after him. But I also want the cats to eat (and I'm not putting their food on the counter) so...

We put up a gate...but then again we also have the litter box in that general area. There is just something about cat food that is FASCINATING to babies--BG just wants to touch the wet food all the time.

BTW, I think I lied about her only having one dose for her first flu shot--thinking about it, I'm now pretty sure she had one dose at her 9-month appointment and then a followup a month or so later. It's only a year ago and already such a blur...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's two shots for children under 2. Which soooo bites. That'll make 4 immunizations, 1 blood draw, 1 make-up immunization we missed at the 6 mo. checkup, and the first of two flu shots. We're definitely splitting all this up.

The boy discovered the litter box today. I think it might be the only thing to rival the food for fascination.

On top of the fridge? On top of the toilet tank? Our kids are at roughly the same point (including fever, what fun!), and mine can reach neither spot without help. From Dad. Who'd have guessed.
